Here’s my first session recap from the 360iDev conference, starting with the keynote. The organizers said they would post the slides that came with our conference USB keys, so if a session already has slides, I’ll wait to post their links and focus instead on my notes about speaker’s comments and highlights from audience Q&As.
This post recaps Mike Lee’s keynote on the mac developer community as a resource. The opening keynote featured two other speakers not covered here: senior Ebay researcher on games with a purpose to enhance Ebay, and students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute on their sponsored game for Ebay. I’ll have a separate post about the WPI students’ awesome job filling in for the Unity3D presenter who didn’t show up, and Unity3D tips I learned from chatting with those students.

Mike Lee is a long-time Cocoa developer who got his start in Seattle (represent!). He recounted some history behind the Cocoa community, and talked passionately about the mac developer community as a key element in his journey - a fitting keynote to kick off the 360|iDev conference. Mike Lee described notable blogs and companies, developer resources, tools, libraries, and useful community hubs. I couldn’t find his slides in the USB keychain, so I looked up the URLs for resources he mentioned and added comments from my notes below:

- Mobile Colloquy - IRC library, though I’m more interested in finding an XMPP library
- Molecules - open source opengl app for chemical molecules, highly recommended to study code
- FMDB - database framework, someone told me it’s a bit more low-level than SQLitePersistentObjects
- SQLitePersistentObjects - an ORM for iPhone SQLite. I attended the developer’s presentation and it looks great, aside from schema migrations support having a low-to-none priority in their future plans.
- ObjectiveResource - another ORM
- RegexKitLite - regexp for iphone, lite version of an older well-respected library
- Mobile Twitterific - free source code worth studying
- Omni Frameworks - useful frameworks from famous group of Mac developers… OmniBase, OmniDataObjects OmniAppKit, OmniInspector, OmniNetworking (recommended by speaker for networking).

- Cocoa Dev - almost like a wiki about cocoa (analogy: if official apple docs is like a bible, cocoadev is the vast literature explaining the bible)

Developer relations:
- Developer portal, WWDC, Evangelism, Partnership Management (in the Godfather movie jargon, getting attention from these guys is like being “made”).
- DTS - acronym for “developer technical support”. I think two DTS incidents are included with apple developer program membership. I heard from multiple attendees that DTS really knows their stuff. The keynote speaker, Mike Lee, is going to work full-time for DTS.
Advice on starting out: Use what everyone else is using in order to increase your chances of getting help from such a small community, instead of starting out with obscure tools, libraries, processes, etc.
Tools
- A tool called “Changes” - folder synchronization for the mac
- A tool called “Versions” - SVN client for the mac
- Otx - built on top of O-tool, disassembler
- F-Script, interactive runtime environment for Obj-C (smalltalk for the win!)
- Analytics - don’t write your own, use an analytics package. (he didn’t recommend any)
